This trimester I’m subbing for a Multimedia Journalism class and I’m really feeling inspired by the investigative spirit. Not the click-bait, fake news of the Facebook era but real boots-on-the-ground journalism. Ears and eyes open, questing for the truth, at times obscene and in-your-face. I am feeling inspired by the Free Press movement spurned on by the counterculture in the 1960s. These publications truly spoke for the fringe elements of society and sometimes resonated with the zeitgeist of the times. Full of articles, illustrations and photos that would never have gotten published in traditional media, these publications appealed to a different audience. There were no ads for laundry soap or shoe polish, but rather head shops and hard rock concerts. The free press was also speaking about topical issues such as climate change, feminism, sexuality, political corruption, and the ills of unbridled capitalism decades before the establishment. They are relics of expression and some articles are even more relevant today than ever. I hope to instill a bit of the Free Press spirit into my students and show them that if someone is censoring you, you probably have something important to say.
Monday Muse is a weekly series where I talk about different things that are inspiring me week to week. It usually takes on one theme, but I’ve thought about changing that up. What is inspiring you right now? What would you like to see on Monday Muse? xx Sierra
